SUBREGION II NORTH

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP???

The 2016 wheat season started with good soil moisture levels thanks to heavy rainfall in the summer, which favored planting. June rains were excellent for growing. Different cultivars could go through their critical period under no water stress thanks to the high water table and the October and November rains.?????????

Temperatures were similar to the historical average. There were 37 recorded touches of frost in the Marcos Juarez area. Temperatures in October and November were mild; no peaks were registered. Proper temperature variation favored and extended grain filling, which resulted in better growth and higher grain weight.

An early attack of wheat leaf rust continued along the season; susceptible cultivars suffered the most. ???

Orange rust and yellow spot were detected in the area near Oliveros. Incidence was not severe and mainly in long and intermediate cycle varieties. Later and more serious attacks of stem rust were detected in very susceptible cultivars. Fusarium appeared in very particular plots and did not disseminate. Yellow spot was mild as wheat leaf spot. Bedbugs were detected early in the season.

The use of fertilizers was widespread. Mainly, DAP at planting and urea at booting. Rates were based on soil sampling and crop monitoring techniques. Proper N fertilizer rates were applied, even at booting, but nevertheless, yields were high. However, nitrogen applications could not avoid white belly grains, with starchy endosperm. Fortunately, in lesser numbers than in the 2015/16 season.???

HSome exceptional yields were recorded, almost peaking potential yields: up to 8,000, 9,000 and 10,000 kg/hectare in some plots in Montes de Oca, Inriville. An average of 4,500 kg/hectare in Marcos Juarez; 4,300 kg/hectare in General Lopez Department, in Bell Ville and in other areas adequately sampled.??????
