SUBREGION II NORTH

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

Planting was under good soil moisture levels; rains were above average most of the months. Excessive rains were present most months, adding to high groundwater levels in some areas. 31 winter frosts were recorded in Marcos Juarez area, at a soil frost depth of 5 cm. However, two intense frosts in June and two more in July did not affect wheat that was starting to tiller.

???August and September rains provided enough moisture to face the critical period under no water stress. Grain filling developed under optimum temperatures along the entire period. Grain yield was excellent, and most cultivars yielded a large percentage of white belly grains.

There was an early attack of yellow rust that continued along the crop cycle; susceptible cultivars were very negatively affected (25% severity in INTA Oliveros' area.) At the end of the cycle, a light attack of stem rust occurred in very susceptible cultivars. In yellow rust resistant cultivars, a moderate attack of leaf rust appeared. In all planting dates, a light attack of stem rust and a mild attack of wheat leaf spot appeared, together with some fusarium A light incidence of stem bacteriosis was detected in long and intermediate-cycle cultivars.

Harvest was under good weather conditions, with proper commercial quality in most plots, except those very susceptible to diseases, yellow rust mainly.

Wheat yields were above average, with peaks of 7,000 kg/h in the southeast and the central region of the province of Cordoba. Diseases monitoring, control measures plus an adequate pre-planting N, P and S fertilization plan were crucial to attaining such yields. Some farmers also fertilized a second time. Stripe rust roya, yellow rust and orange rust were a limiting factor and resulted in a significant yield decline in some areas of the subregion.

???Harvest in Cordoba was the second largest of all times, exceeding 3,420 kg/h on average, close to last season record of 3,500 kg/hl. ??????
