SUBREGION II SOUTH

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

The area sown with wheat in the Northern Central region of Buenos Aires province had a slight increase as regards the campaign of 2009/2010, but it did not achieve the historical average of the region.

The sow was done during June, July and August. In the first half of June little amounts wheat were sown, sowing was mainly concentrated by the end of June and during July, therefore, varieties of intermediate to short cycle were used. It is estimated that the sown area was composed of a 40% of long cycle varieties and a 60% of intermediate and short cycle varieties.

It was fertilized with N, P and in some cases with S. The application of P in general was done with the sowing, while the N and S were mainly applied in tillering and a minor percentage before sowing.

From May to September, there was a deficit of rains as regards the historical average (1910-2010) of 124.7 mm. however, the rains had a good distribution, and occurred in proper times for the crops.

There were frosts during the leaf spotting that did not produce damages, and the varieties of long cycles that need cold were favored. At flowering, that happened later than normal, no cold damages were detected. The maximum temperatures during flowering and grain filling were low and uniform. In October and November, the temperatures were between 19ºC and 27ºC. The solar radiation was high, which favored even more the metabolic processes of the plants.

There were no damages by insects in the crops. The more common diseases “Leaf Septorosis” and “Yellos Spots” were only detected in small quantities. The “Wheat Leaf Rust” was observed during the vegetative period. As regards the ear diseases, especially “Fusariosis” were only detected in small quantities in those materials sown latter and which were more susceptible.

The harvest was delayed between 8 and 10 days, the wheat had a slow maturity, and in good weather conditions.

The performances surpassed all historical records for this crop, with average levels over the 4500 kg/ha and peaks higher than 8000 kg/ha, with hectoliter weights in some cases of 85 kg/hl and weights of 1000 seeds with many lots surpassing the 40g.

In these results never before registered, there was the incidence of the good distribution of rains and excellent weather conditions during the grain filling.
