The weather conditions were favorable for the wheat crop as regards the 4 previous years that due to water stress and late frosts, the performances were low. This year, there were no late frosts as in the cycle 2007/2008, and the good rains during the critical moment of the crop were determinant in the performance of most of the sub-region.
In general, the performances were high and varied according to the zone, the rains and the technology applied by the producer. The East zone of the sub-region had excellent performance, which decreased to the Western zone, but maintaining a high level.
All the sub-region had rains during July, which delayed the long cycle sow, and favoring the short cycle sow. Due to the adequate temperature and humidity in the soil, the wheat crops developed normally, with a good tillering and with no frosts affecting the leaf surface.
The total rains from June to December were a 15% higher than normal and a 20% higher in the reproductive period October-December. In November, the medium temperatures were of more than 1ºC inferior to the average of the last 10 years, and with temperatures inferior to 30ºC, which permitted a slow grain filling, which enlarged the filling period for 3 days. These good environmental conditions favored the weight of 1000 grains, the number of grains per square meter and the hectoliter weight, which permitted obtaining high performances and a good commercial quality.
The leaf diseases were important. The susceptible varieties had a high occurrence of leaf rust (Puccinia triticina).
The harvest was delayed between 3 and 7 days. Due to the good weather conditions, the performance of the zone was between 4000 and 7000 kg/ha, with some problems in the commercial quality since the proteins of the grain were lower than normal.
