SUBREGION V SOUTH

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

After a dry summer, abundant rains in February started to saturate the profile along the crop cycle.

From May to July, excess moisture made it difficult to farm (mainly traditional farming) and changed planting dates. No till, however, could plant at proper dates in marginal areas, with good results.

Winter months were benign, frosts were not significant either in intensity or duration.

Excess rain washed out the soils and reduced nutrient levels. Generally, nitrogen is not properly replenished, which affects grain quality from the grain filling period.

November featured less rains, end of the first week average temperatures raised leading to water deficit, especially in shallow soils. This negatively affected expectations of high yields.

Harvest showed different yields either above or similar to historical averages. Commercial and industrial grain quality were low, as was production.

In this sub region the wheat production was 3.581.351 tons., the 26% of the national total. Were sampled 217.561 tons., the 6,07% of the sub region production.
