SUBREGION V SOUTH

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

Soil moisture was adequate and planting conditions were very good. However, farmers were not interested in planting wheat because of commercial policies. There was a decrease in area planted, below 2013 acreage and very little technology was used.

The first two weeks in July received some rains that created proper conditions for late planting.

Although winter was expected to be very cold, temperatures did not meet expectations. Some excess moisture in the soil delayed planting completion.

July and August were good but in some fields excess water led to ponding and nutrient washing.

Fields reached reproduction stage in excellent conditions, requiring little or no nutrient replenishment. The slight frosts by mid-September did not affect yield.

Grain filling was good; only short cycle wheats suffered some stress, with the resulting lower yield and smaller grain size.

Harvest was under good conditions with yields above average and commercial quality severely affected by low protein content values.

In this sub region the wheat production was 2.420.891 tons. the 21,5 % of the national total. Were sampled 181.153 tons, the 7,5 % of the sub region production.
