Rains from February to May allowed a good profile reloading. Rains accumulated from May to November were similar to average (1934-2018) (Source: INTA Agro-meteorological Observatory, Parana Research Station) and favored appropriate sowing and crop growing. Grain formation and filling were under no water stress and temperature issues. However, since October and November rains were below average, some cultivars suffered water stress. Mid temperatures were above average (1934-2018) during crop growing except in July and August when they were similar to normal conditions. Frost hit approximately 20 times from May to September, the last ones on September 20 and 21, with little and sporadic damage on wheat ears. Environmental conditions starting in July favored early attacks of leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) and stripe rust roya (P. striiformis f.sp.tritici) at tillering, reaching moderate to high levels in susceptible cultivars. Black or stem rust (P. graministritici) was seen by end October in susceptible varieties. The severity of stem Fusarium infestation (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium spp.) was either mild or high in susceptible cultivars with mild to low infestation in the first two weeks of October. Following data from the Entre Rios Board of Trade (Siber Bolsacer reports - www.bolsacer.org.ar) planted area increased 9% to 443,100 ha, the largest planted area in 20 years. However, production in the province was 28% lower than the previous growing season, with an average yield of 2,699 kg/ha.
