SUBREGION II SOUTH

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

Wheat planted area did not increase as significantly as expected due to excess moisture. Acreage increased only 15 to 20% when compared to last year season.

Intermediate and short cycle varieties were planted in June and July. Rains in late May and the end of June delayed planting between seven to ten days. Early planted seeds set very well. Early growth stages developed under adequate moisture levels.

Phosphate fertilizers were applied at planting. Nitrogen fertilization was used before planting or at planting/tillering. Late planted plots suffered a significant water stress in August, at tillering. Water deficit continued through September when a more critical growth stage starts.

Flowering was under good rains and consequently, better water supply. Grain filling was between October 20 and November 20, under low temperatures and mild showers. The number of grains per square meter was very good.

Attacks of Puccinia striiformis caused stripe rust roya and Puccinia graminis caused stem rust, mostly on susceptible germplasm varieties. These attacks were severe, especially during grain filling.

Harvest was under excellent weather conditions and at regular dates, from December 5 to 15. Average yield ranged from 4.000-4.200 kg/ha with peaks of 7.500-8.000 kg/ha in specific plots.

Grain commercial quality was very good. Grain filling under cool temperatures resulted in good test weights and proper number of grain per square meter. However, low protein content was recorded in certain plots.

In this sub region the wheat production was 3.684.423 tons., the 20.1% of the national total. Were sampled 157.750 tons., the 4.3% of the sub region production.
