SUBREGION IV

BACKGROUND FOR THE CROP

 
        

 
The 2018 wheat growing season developed under good humidity levels at planting, water stress in some areas when the crop was starting to set, optimum temperatures at grain filling and good and well distributed rainfall. Planting was completed in the expected dates because there were no heavy rains in June and August.
Yields were generally good or very good, even though they did not reach the expected peak values. Late frosts by the end of October, early and mid-November and even in early December resulted in large losses, even 100% in some specific places. In October and by the end of the year, a combination of hail, wind, and rain in Gonzalo Chaves and Tres Arroyos led to significant losses.
Fine rains all across Subregion IV prevented water stress at booting. Proper temperatures and soil humidity levels allowed wheat to develop as expected, with good tillering. 
At grain filling, temperatures were adequate, always below 30°C.  Therefore, the period from heading to maturity was longer than normal and harvest started in the last week of December. Excellent rains and proper temperatures at grain filling resulted in high test weights. Farmers’ fertilization management helped keep protein contents above 10,5%.
Environmental conditions favored the occurrence of foliar diseases, especially yellow rust. The incidence of leaf rust and stem rust was low, even though environmental conditions favored the former.
Proper temperatures and rains, the occurrence of yellow rust, isolated frosts, and hail resulted in yields ranging from 2,500 to 7,000 kg/h.

In this sub region the wheat production was 2.311.806  tons., the 11,9 % of the national total. Were sampled 132.298 tons., the 5,7​​% of the sub region production​.
